Fairtrade - Guatemala

In 1988, farmers and surviving members of the devastated cooperative la Unión Ixil established an informal association to address the exploitation of farmers by intermediaries and to provide members with affordable access to necessities. Members worked together to create a pharmacy, purchase a corn mill, and open a small store.

Asociación Chajulense (Asociación Chajulense Va’l Vaq Quyol) was formally founded in 1990 by 1,800 farmers in San Gaspar Chajul, El Quiche, Guatemala. In the years that followed, Chajulense transitioned to organic coffee production. Members believed that while everyone had a right to improve his or her quality of life, nature had to be respected. The association continues to place great importance on the conservation of the environment for present and future generations.

In 1991 Chajulense incorporated more communities, constructed their main offices, and purchased machinery with the support of PRODERE (United Nations Program for Development). Chajulense sells 100% of their coffee on the Fair Trade market.

The Fair Trade price has enabled Asociacion Chajulense Val Vaq Quyol to establish various social and productive programs.

Education

In 1994 the association created a center where 50 young people living in the most remote areas could complete a basic level of education.

The minister of education recently recognized Chajulense’s work and approved its center.

Productive Investment

The association has diversified products to include cardamom, honey, milk, and cheese. They plan to begin exporting organic honey. The association also built an inn to promote local tourism and opened an Ixil culture center and funds the production of traditional womens' dresses.

Credit Program

In 1999, the association initiated a micro-credit program, which is available to members.

Health

Chalujense supports the use of natural remedies that improve the health of community members.
